How to Pack Necklaces So They Do Not Tangle
How to pack necklaces so they do not tangle: fasten every clasp, keep each chain separate, stop pendants from sliding around freely and pack necklaces flat or in dedicated compartments. Most travel tangles happen because several loose chains are allowed to move against one another inside the same pouch.

The right method depends on the chain. A fine cable chain needs different handling from a chunky link necklace, and a large pendant needs more support than a plain chain. Before packing, check the clasp, links and any delicate decorative sections.
Start with clean, dry jewellery
Do not pack a necklace while it is damp from cleaning, perfume or wear. Moisture and cosmetic residue can remain trapped in a pouch, while a sticky or oily chain can pick up lint and catch more easily on other jewellery.
Lay each necklace out separately and check that the chain is already free from knots. It is much easier to solve a small twist on a table than inside a hotel room after several pieces have become tangled together.
Method 1: use separate compartments

A travel jewellery case with individual necklace sections is one of the simplest options. Fasten the clasp, place the necklace in its own compartment and position the pendant so it cannot travel across the box.
If the case has hooks, use them only if the necklace hangs without being stretched. The chain should be secure, not under tension.
Method 2: one necklace per soft pouch
If you use pouches, place only one fine necklace in each small pouch rather than dropping several chains together. Fasten the clasp first and lay the chain in a loose curve. For a pendant necklace, keep the pendant near the centre and avoid sharply folding the chain around it.
Soft pouches are useful for preventing surface contact, but they are not magic: if several fine chains share one pouch, they can still knot together as the bag moves.

Method 3: secure a very fine chain through a straw
For a fine chain without a bulky pendant, a clean drinking straw can act as a simple separator. Open the clasp, feed one end of the chain through the straw, then fasten the clasp outside it. The rigid tube stops most of the chain from collapsing into a knot.
Do not force a thick chain, a large pendant or delicate decorative section through a narrow straw. The method is only useful when the chain moves freely without scraping or bending.
Method 4: use a flat card or small bag for pendant necklaces
A flat jewellery card can keep a pendant and chain in a predictable position. Place the pendant on the front, guide the chain around the card without pulling tightly and secure the clasp on the reverse. A small zip bag can also work if the chain is laid flat and the clasp is kept near the top rather than allowed to bunch at the bottom.

How to pack several necklaces in one case
- Fasten every clasp.
- Sort necklaces by chain thickness and delicacy.
- Give fine chains their own slots, pouches or separators.
- Place large pendants so they cannot strike neighbouring jewellery.
- Keep very textured or sharp pieces away from fine plated chains.
- Close the case only after checking that no chain is trapped in the edge or zip.
Common packing mistakes
- Putting several unfastened chains into one pouch.
- Leaving pendants free to swing and wrap around other necklaces.
- Packing jewellery while damp.
- Pulling fine chains tightly around cards or hooks.
- Putting heavy jewellery directly on top of delicate chains.
- Waiting until the end of a trip to separate pieces that have already begun to twist together.
Unpack necklaces when you arrive
For longer trips, take the necklaces out of the travel case when practical and lay or hang them safely. This reduces the time they spend compressed together and makes it easier to notice a loose clasp or developing tangle before it becomes a knot.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I leave necklace clasps open when packing?
Usually no. Fastening the clasp turns the chain into a controlled loop and reduces loose ends that can wind around other pieces.
Can I put two necklaces in one pouch?
You can, but fine chains are much less likely to tangle if they are physically separated. One necklace per small pouch is safer for delicate pieces.
Does the straw method work with pendants?
Only when the pendant and chain design allow the chain to pass through without force. Do not push a pendant or delicate section through a narrow tube.
How should I pack a chunky necklace?
Lay it flat in its own compartment or pouch, support heavy decorative sections and avoid placing weight on top of it.
