How to Store Amber Jewellery Safely at Home
Amber jewellery benefits from slightly more thoughtful storage than many harder jewellery materials. Amber is relatively soft, so the main aim is to protect it from scratches, knocks, excessive heat and unnecessary contact with cosmetics or household products.

This article concentrates on storage. For buying advice, cleaning guidance and a wider overview, see our main How to Choose and Care for Amber Jewellery guide.
Keep amber separate from harder jewellery
The simplest rule is also the most useful: avoid allowing amber to rub against harder items. Gem-set jewellery, metal chains, watch bracelets and even some clasps can scratch a polished amber surface if pieces are stored loose together.
A soft-lined jewellery box, fabric pouch or individual compartment is ideal. If you own a beaded amber necklace, give it enough space that the beads are not trapped under heavier jewellery.
Do not hang heavy amber necklaces for long periods
Hanging storage can look attractive, but it is not always the best option for a heavier beaded necklace. Long-term hanging places constant tension on the stringing material and clasp. Laying the necklace flat in a roomy compartment can reduce strain and makes it easier to check the string and fastenings before wear.
Choose a cool, stable place
A normal bedroom dressing table or jewellery cabinet is usually suitable provided it is away from radiators, strong direct sunlight and other heat sources. Avoid leaving amber jewellery for extended periods on a sunny windowsill or in a very hot car.
Stable household conditions are preferable to dramatic changes in temperature. There is no need for complicated specialist storage; gentle handling and a sensible location matter more.
Keep perfume and beauty products separate
Perfume, hairspray, body lotion and cleaning products should not be stored where they can leak or spray directly onto jewellery. A useful routine is to apply cosmetics and fragrance first, allow them to settle, and put your amber jewellery on last.
Should amber be kept in plastic?
For ordinary home storage, a soft fabric pouch or lined jewellery compartment is generally more practical than a tightly sealed plastic bag. The priority is to prevent rubbing and contamination, not to create an airtight environment.
Store earrings in pairs and protect posts
Amber earrings can be stored in a small pair compartment or soft pouch. If the earrings have posts, keep the backs attached where practical so the posts are less likely to catch on other jewellery or fabric. Drop earrings should lie flat rather than being compressed beneath heavier pieces.
Check clasps and strings before putting jewellery away
Storage is also a useful moment for a quick condition check. Look for loose clasps, stretched stringing, bent fittings or beads that appear unusually mobile. Dealing with a small problem early is easier than discovering it when you are getting ready to wear the piece.

A simple amber storage routine
After wearing your jewellery, give it a gentle wipe with a clean, soft cloth if needed. Fasten chains and clasps, lay necklaces flat, place each piece in its own soft compartment and keep the box away from heat and direct sunlight. These small habits help preserve the polished finish and make your jewellery easier to enjoy for years to come.
